•• * Одним из любимых английских слов патриарха инъязовского переводоведения Я.И. Рецкера было justice. На многочисленных примерах он показывал, как важно разобраться в специфике употребления этого слова, прежде чем выбрать вариант перевода. В принципе выбор идет между справедливостью, правосудием и юстицией (иногда также судья Верховного суда, но это очевиднее). Правда, в отличие от Якова Иосифовича, я считаю, что три первых значения существуют в этом слове по сути слитно, не воспринимаясь носителями языка как отдельные. Другое дело – разнообразие контекстуальных переводов. Вот пример. Выступая на пресс-конференции в Петербурге, Дж. Буш сказал: We’ll hunt down all our enemies and bring them to justice. Интересно, что американский переводчик президента вторую часть этой фразы опустил, сказал просто Мы всех наших врагов переловим. В данном случае опущение не наносит большого ущерба смыслу и цели коммуникации, но все же интересно отметить, что первое, что приходит в голову, – привлечем их к ответственности.
•• Вспоминается более серьезный текст Буша – его программное выступление в Конгрессе 21 сентября 2001 года:
•• Whether we bring our enemies to justice or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done.
•• Чтобы сохранить «игру слова», можно предложить такой, например, перевод:
•• Заставим ли мы наших врагов предстать перед справедливым судом или покараем их справедливым мечом, справедливость обязательно восторжествует.
•• Можно попробовать и короче (кстати, компрессия русского перевода – одно из самых интересных и трудных упражнений для переводчика):
•• Судом или мечом – но правосудие совершится и справедливость восторжествует.
•• Здесь нет «игры», но звучит афористичнее.
•• Интересным показался мне пример употребления этого слова в статье в New York Times:
•• Most striking was a difference over the use of military force, with 84 percent of Americans but only 48 percent of Europeans supporting force as a means of imposing international justice.
•• Не звучит международная справедливость, и нельзя сказать международное правосудие, так как не это имеется в виду, к тому же США отказались ратифицировать конвенцию о создании Международного уголовного суда. Вариант перевода: применение силы для утверждения справедливости/справедливого порядка в мире.
